6 Proven Home Remedies for Relieving Toothache

Isobel Berry

Even though severe toothache calls for an immediate trip to an emergency dental practice, there are things you can do to lessen the pain and discomfort until you see the dentist. Try these proven home remedies for maximum relief of toothaches.

1. OTC oral painkillers

If you have over-the-counter oral pain relief medication in your medicine cabinet, take advantage of their instant pain-relieving effect to calm symptoms. Strictly follow the dosage instructions to avoid complications and side effects. Check the dose and frequency if in doubt.

2. Brushing and flossing

Gently brushing your teeth can help remove the food debris that's causing bacterial populations to grow in your mouth, aggravating your situation. Make sure you use a soft-bristle toothbrush to avoid aggravating the affected area.

After brushing, swish some warm water in your mouth for a few seconds and then spit it out.

Flossing can also help control bacterial populations and alleviate toothache, especially if the pain is caused by food debris that's stuck between your teeth or along the gum line.

3. Saltwater

Salt is universally known for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties, so you shouldn't underestimate the soothing power of a saltwater mouth rinse. Gargling and swishing warm saltwater can help dislodge and clear the debris that's irritating your gums and causing you pain while disinfecting the affected areas.

4. Cold compress

Another way to effectively suppress toothache is to hold a cold compress or ice pack against the outside of your cheeks. The cold helps to numb the pain in the affected area.

5. Diluted hydrogen peroxide

Like saltwater, hydrogen peroxide has antiseptic properties that can help combat the harmful dental bacteria that might be causing you pain. Rinsing your mouth with diluted hydrogen peroxide can help reduce the bacterial population in your mouth, lessening toothache symptoms.

6. Probiotic yoghurt

All yoghurt have bone-building calcium and power-boosting proteins. Unfortunately, not all yoghurt contains probiotics, which are essential for fighting harmful bacteria and maintaining a healthy gut.

Probiotic yoghurt can help reduce toothache because of its ability to produce healthy bacteria that fight off the harmful bacteria in your mouth. Plus, yoghurt is a soft food that won't aggravate your aching tooth further.

While the above home remedies can help deal with toothaches, they do not substitute a visit to your dentist. Toothache can be a symptom of underlying dental health problems that can become worse if not addressed quickly. For more information on toothache treatments, contact a professional near you.
