3 Signs That Dentures Need Realignment

Dentures are an excellent solution for missing teeth. They fit your gums perfectly, restoring your smile and allowing you to enjoy your favourite foods comfortably. However, even a perfectly fitting denture needs realignment at some point. Notably, denture realignment can be conducted at a denturist's clinic (chairside reline) or in a lab. Both have pros and cons, and a denturist will advise you accordingly. That said, when do you know it is time to realign your dentures? Here are the top signs.

Unintended Side Smile

An unintended smile can send mixed signals, especially when in a social gathering. For instance, if you are in a social group and someone spots you smiling in their direction, they will take it as a friendly gesture. However, flashing an involuntary side smile at a funeral comes off as rude and unsympathetic. Therefore, a misaligned denture can put you in an awkward position without even realising it because it gives you a constant smiley face. If you look at a mirror and notice a side smile, your denture could be out of position. The realignment will help put your denture back into position and eliminate the unintended smile.

Prolonged Discomfort

Perfectly fitting dentures should never feel uncomfortable. However, most patients tend to ignore mild discomfort, not knowing that it could lead to sores and oral infections. For instance, dentures with sharp edges can prick soft tissue in the mouth, causing wounds. Similarly, loose dentures that constantly move side-to-side cause friction and lead to sores. Therefore, see a denturist for denture realignment whenever you experience discomfort, regardless of intensity. It will save you a lot of agony down the line.

Overdue Realignment

Soft relines tend to last a short time; therefore, patients need regular denture realignments. On the other hand, hard realignments offer a more permanent fix, which lasts longer. It makes it easy to forget about future relines because you get accustomed to a denture's fit. It might explain why most patients remember about their denture realignment years after a hard reline. If your dentures are overdue for realignment, you will experience issues such as difficulty in chewing. Sometimes, you might not feel anything out of the ordinary, but it does not mean you are out of the woods. Booking for denture realignment after a long time helps prevent future problems associated with misaligned dentures. Notably, denturists recommend realignment every two years.
